Monterey State Historic Park houses the oldest theater in the county. Jack Swan built it in 1846 as a lodging house and tavern for sailors. Army officers started producing plays in 1850, Swan added a stage and benches for the actors to perform. After Swan died in the late 1800s, the theater is where whalers sought shelter. During Monterey’s 167th anniversary in 1937, the Troupers of the Gold Coast revived old-time melodramas on the stage of California’s very first theater. Originally built by Claes Vechte in 1699, this reconstructed house, with its solid stone walls and high brick gables, is a landmark in American military and sports history. Today it is the center of a vibrant, diverse community of engaged citizens. Presence is the first in a series of four 2020 OSH exhibitions exploring how contemporary artists encourage participation and civic engagement. Each artist group encourages deeper engagement with specific places that support plant life, from the Old Stone House garden to our own windows and backyards, to catalyze individual and collective rejuvenation. The term Regeneration suggests repairing what is lost or damaged, or a process of renewal and growth in organisms or ecosystems that makes them resilient to both natural cycles and events that cause disturbances.
Costumed interpreters provide insight into how the Jewett family lived and entertained. Outbuildings on the property include a reconstructed late 18th century log cabin and an 1860s barn. The Old Stone House is a reconstructed 1699 Dutch farmhouse modeled after the house that was central in the Battle of Brooklyn during the American Revolution. Open to the public year-round, Old Stone House features a historic interpretive center with a permanent exhibit about the Battle of Brooklyn.
In the mid-20th century, at one time, it was the site of a used-car dealership. After acquisition and renovation by the National Park Service (NPS) in the 1950s, the Old Stone House was adapted as a house museum. The Old Stone House stands among the neighborhood's stores and restaurants. The building is considered part of the Rock Creek Parkway urban natural area and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. The Old Stone House is also a contributing property to the Georgetown Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.
The back part of the photograph is of a famous vista of Monument Valley, Utah, the scene of many western movies from the 1930's to 1970's. Also similar to the place where the Roadrunner and Wile E. Outdoor spaces run along the side of the home and connect with the front yard. In the rear, the original stone facade joins the shingle-clad addition. The updated kitchen features a large central island, soapstone countertops, and plenty of windows. Another view of the living area reveals a bay of windows along one wall.
Clifton’s Cafeteria is the last of the chain, known as the oldest surviving cafeteria-style restaurant in Los Angeles and the largest public cafeteria in the world. Clifton’s Cafeteria closed September 2011 for a multi-million dollar restoration financed by the restaurant’s new owner, developer Andrew Meieran, who also owns The Edison. Judging by Meieran’s previous work, the renovations will be just as impressive as the original Clifton’s. A new neon sign was turned on January 2015, and with chef Jason Fullilove and barman Damian Windsor helming the kitchens and bars respectively, Clifton’s Cafeteria is scheduled to reopen at last in September 2015. Located within a city preservation zone, the property’s front lawn is bordered by a landmarked Arroyo Stone retaining wall that also runs in front of several neighboring houses. A large bedroom is located on the main level along the front of the home.
Fully restored in 1931, the structure is a graceful combination of history and religion. Its striking 46-foot-tall tower holds five bells, the largest weighing 1,200 pounds. Signs guide visitors through the bougainvillea-covered buildings including the parish, museum, and secluded gardens. A visit to the historic shrine is one of the top things to do in San Diego. There's a reason why one of Downtown L.A.'s most vibrant districts is called the Historic Core. It's also where visitors can experience places that have helped contribute to L.A.'s more contemporary reputation as a food and arts destination.
